The Hull Identification Number (HIN) is usually a twelve- or 14-character serial amount that uniquely identifies a boat. The HIN is analogous into a VIN on an automobile.
The initial 3 digits are classified as the Company’s Identification Code (ex. Boat manufacturer for example Sea Ray, Meridian, etcetera.). The 4 digits after that are the maker’s serial quantity for that boat. The third and 4th digits from your end tend to be the date of manufacture. The letter to the day from the manufacture corresponds to your month with the calendar year, i.e. A = January, B = February, C = March and so on. The last two digits on the HIN number stand for the model calendar year.
All boats produced or imported on or following November 1, 1972, must bear a HIN, and this HIN needs to be recognized throughout boat registration. Vessels made or imported before 1972 are EXEMPT given that they generally do not need a HIN.
The HIN is identified over a steel or plastic plate, ordinarily around the transom with the boat, usually on the proper starboard (correct) side in the transom in two inches of the highest of transom, gunwale, or hull/deck joint, whichever is cheapest.
On vessels without transoms, or impractical to use transoms, the HIN is usually affixed on the starboard (right) outboard aspect of hull, aft, within just one foot from the stern and in two inches of the best from the hull aspect, gunwale or hull/deck joint, whichever is least expensive.
